Your Guide: Celebrate St. Agrippina With Food, Fun and All-4-One

Grammy winner All-4-One will perform at the North End celebration on Aug. 2-4.

The next big North End feast is coming up this weekend—the 99th annual celebration in honor of Saint Agrippina.

Started in 1914, the event is organized annually by the Benefit Society of Boston and features tons of great music—including a concert by Grammy-winning R&B/pop band All-4-One—food, games and more.

So who was Saint Agrippina?

According to the society website, saintagrippinaboston.com: “Saint Agrippina of Mineo, Sicily was a beautiful young blond princess who was unmercifully tortured to death by the Emperor of Rome, Emperor Valerian, in 256 A.D. The young virgin martyr’s body was quickly taken from Rome to Mineo by three holy women. On this miraculous journey, the commoners were amazed by the lightweight fragranced body protected by angels and shielded by clouds.”

As part of the weekend festivities, a life-sized statue of Saint Agrippina will be carried through the decorated streets of the North End accompanied by music played by the North End Marching Band and the Italian American Band.
