VIDEO: Aquarium Seal Gives Birth to Pup
The 8-to-9 pound pup was the first born at the aquarium.
Congratulations are in order to Ursula, a Northern Fur Seal at the New England Aquarium.
The 14-year old seal gave birth to a new pup sometime last Tuesday. According to the aquarium website, an engineer noticed blood in the seal enclosure and called for veterinary and conservation staff. Ursula and the new pup were found a little later.
Fellow Northern Fur Seal Issac is believed to be the father. This is Ursula's first pup, and the first born as part of the aquarium's rare species breeding program.
Both Ursula and her pup won't be in the outdoor enclosure any time soon. Aquarium staff want to give them time to bond and for the pup to begin socializing. In the meantime, the aquarium released the above video of mom and pup.
